Kali Gandaki River “3-day Classic Wildness Journey”
This is one of the most well-known rivers in Nepal which has its origin in Mustang which is an enclave of Nepal jutting into Tibet on the other side of the Himalayas. Over here, the river winds through a flat, arid and open valley and cuts through one of the deepest gorges in the world between Dhaulagiri (81677 m ) to the west and Annapurna (8091 m ) to the east.
Merging with the Modi Khola, it heads south through an area till recently was a stranger to tourists. There are hardly any villages actually on the river itself and most of them are located on the higher terraced areas – some few hundred meters above. This river is named after Goddess Kali and holds great reverence among devotees. Besides offering delights for the avid bird-watcher, you can also spot mongoose, monkeys and even the elusive leopard.
Accessibility & Location
The trip begins and ends in Pokhara. After hearty early morning breakfast at the lakeside, you will be transferred by private transportation to the put-in point at Maldhunga of the Kali Gandaki River ( an approximate 3-hour drive ). After a 3 day, 55 km wilderness journey, the trip ends and we come to the take-out point of Mirmi. Lunch will be served to you there, cleaning up, load the gear and head back to Pokhara – a 5-hour drive. The Kali Gandaki river rafting trip can be ideally be combined with the Annapurna Region Trek before or after the trip depending on your preferences.
The Kali Gandaki is one of the oldest tributaries of the Gandaki river system in Mid-western Nepal. The river was born before the formation of the Himalayas some 70 million years ago; during this period the river was flowing from the marginal Himalayan range of the Tibetan plate to the Indian Ocean. When the Himalayan range rose, it cut the valley to form Annapurna ( 8091 m ) and Dhaulagiri ( 81677 m ) massif and gave birth to the formation of the deepest gorge in the world. The Kali Gandaki River Valley route is also considered to be the oldest trading route and the pilgrimage trail to the revered holy site of Muktinath.
The spectacular scenery combined with cascading waterfalls and challenging rapids lures many white water enthusiasts to this valley for an experience found nowhere else in the world. This river is perfect for medium length wilderness expeditions and a journey through excellent bird watching and wildlife.
